Bio
If you are on this site because you are looking for editors of color, Robin Washington is the achetype of that: He is one of very few African Americans to have served as the top editor of a U.S. daily newspaper. (Rarely have there been more than a dozen out of 1,000 papers at any given time.) That's the quantitative story. As for quality, he led the Duluth News Tribune to the most national awards in its 140-year history. Washington also produced the Civil Rights Movement documentary, "You Don't Have to Ride Jim Crow!" The landmark film literally rewrote history books on the origins of the movement, leading to two presidential medals and two official state historical markers, among many other honors. He has also been editor and/or publisher of publications ranging from an 80-year-old rural weekly to a 500,000 circulation consumer newspaper. His columns and commentaries have appeared in scores of newspapers as well as on NPR, coupled with guest appearances on ABC, Fox News, MSNBC, CNN and numerous local and regional outlets. A Fellow in Science Broadcast Journalism at WGBH Boston, for which he continues to produce radio reports, Washington was an adjunct professor of journalism at Northeastern University and Emerson College and continues to guide student broadcasters at Wisconsin Public Radio's KUWS at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Washington is available to instruct, edit, consult or serve as an interim editor as needed, which he did recently for The Marshall Project, illing in as commentary editor for the prestigious nonprofit criminal justice website, Washington is a member of The Boston Globe's editorial board and a national writer for American City Business Journals, among other clients of his content agency, Trains, Planes & Automobiles LLC - named originally for his sub-specialty of transportation writing. He has many others, and is always willing to share.
